In Psalm 110:1a, David said, “The Lord says to my Lord”. Who is David’s Lord and who is the Lord of David’s Lord? David is listening to and describing a divine conversation taking place from God the Father to God the Son. The first “Lord” mentioned is the Hebrew word “Jehovah” is referring to God. The second mention of “Lord” is the word “Adonai” and is referring to the Messiah, Jesus. God is the Lord and David’s Lord is Jesus. God said to Jesus, “Sit at my right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet” (v. 1b.) God’s right hand was a position of ultimate power and authority (Exodus 15:6; Isaiah 48:13). We know Jesus has always been (John 8:58), came down from heaven (John 1:14), ascended back into heaven after the resurrection (Acts 1:9-12), and sits at the right hand of God (Colossians 3:1, 1 Peter 3:22).
Hebrews 10:11-14 tells us “Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest (Jesus) had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God. Since that time, He waits for His enemies to be made his footstool, because by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” Jesus is the High Priest David is referring to in Psalm 110:4 and He was the ultimate once-for-all sacrifice for our sins. He is our conquering King over sin and Lord of salvation!
In Psalm 110, David wrote about Jesus as the King (vv. 1-3) and eternal High Priest (v. 4). This psalm is extremely important to understanding Jesus rightly and is quoted by Jesus in the synoptic gospels (Matthew 22:43, Mark 12:36, Luke 20:42) and Peter in his sermon at Pentecost (Acts 2:33–35). In fact, Psalm 110:1 is the most quoted or referred to verse in the psalms in the New Testament. Hebrews 7:11-28 refers to Psalm 110:4 and gives almost a chapter of commentary on Jesus as the High Priest. The writer of Hebrews tells us Jesus is a priest in the order of Melchizedek. Jesus is the eternal High Priest more perfect than any that came from the Levitical priesthood (Hebrews 7:11). He is the “better hope by which we draw near to God” (Hebrews 7:19).
Unlike the other temporary priests, Jesus came by an oath from God (Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 6:17) and is the “guarantor of a better covenant” (Hebrews 7:22). Not only was David’s Lord King over all, He is the High Priest forever! Hebrews 7:25 says, “Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.” Jesus is the conquering King over the grave, but His wrath will also one day be poured out as He judges the nations (Matthew 25:31-46, Revelation 19:15)! Jesus is my Lord. He is my High Priest! He is my victorious and conquering King! Praise His holy name!
Questions:
1. What comfort does Jesus being seated at the right of God bring to your life?
2. Jesus lives forever to make intercession for you. How does that impact you?
3. Is Jesus your Lord, King, and High Priest?
Prayer:
Thank You Jesus for being my Lord, King, and High Priest. Thank You for interceding for me at the right hand of God. Thank You for reigning over everything as King of Kings. Thank you for being the only One that saves and takes away our sins! Thank you that one day You will pour out Your wrath on all evil as you continue your eternal reign. You are my Lord! You are my King! You are my High Priest! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
