Studying Peter’s first sermon (Acts 2:14-41) and made a few observations that still apply to preaching today.
Peter:
- Preached to unbelievers (religious Jews)
- Quoted and expounded upon Scripture (Joel and Psalms)
- Relied on the Holy Spirit (vv. 14-21)
- Called out sin (v. 23, 26)
- Asked for repentance (v.38)
- Exalted Jesus (22-36)
- Explained the Resurrection (gave four proofs in vv. 22-35)
- Centered on the gospel (how to be saved; vv. 21, 36-41)
- Preached with urgency (v. 21, 40)
- Displayed the Trinity (e.g. v. 32)
- Caused a response (cut to the heart and questions v. 37)
- Urged people to be baptized (v. 38)
(There’s probably more points to be made)
The result? 3,000 people were saved and immediately joined the fellowship of the other believers – the church (v. 41). Biblical preaching causes people to be involved in and be the church (Acts 2:41-47).
