(Read Philippians 2:24)
While Paul desired to send Timothy to the Philippians, he seemed to need him to stay with him a little longer. In verse 23, Paul said he would send him to them “as soon as I see how things go with me.” Perhaps Paul was concerned he would die in prison? Timothy might need to stay with Paul to receive his final instructions before his death to continue the ministry. This may not be the case as he was confident he would remain on the earth longer (1:21-26). Later, in 2 Timothy 4:9-11, Paul instructed Timothy to come to him as he sensed his impending death. Timothy was a great asset to Paul, and as much as he wanted to send him to the Philippians, Paul also needed him.
Not only did Paul desire to send Timothy and Epaphroditus to the Philippians, but he was sure he would also revisit them. Paul first visited Philippi on his second missionary journey (Acts 16:6-40). Timothy accompanied him there (Acts 16:1-6). There, Paul saw Lydia and her household come to faith. He also saw the Philippian jailer and his household come to faith. Paul visited a second time and possibly a third time during his third missionary journey, according to Acts 20:1-6.
Paul was confident “in the Lord” (v. 24) that he would return to see the Philippians again. This wasn’t just Paul’s desire but God’s as well. Perhaps Paul sensed this in prayer as he prayed for God to finish what He started in the Philippians (1:6). He wanted to return and see this come to pass! His desire to see them was matched by his presence. He was confident this would happen once again.
Checking in with those you have led to Christ or have discipled is essential for their spiritual health. Paul modeled this by visiting churches he started in previous missionary journeys. Spending time with people is vital to discipleship. While we should pray for our brothers and sisters in the faith like Paul did, we should desire to be with them. We get the honor of doing this every Sunday as we worship together. Other times of fellowship and spiritual growth like Wednesday night Bible studies, small groups, fellowships, and times of serving together are bonuses we should not miss! I love eating lunch, grabbing coffee, or simply visiting in the home with believers I know. Believers need personal visitations and continued community.
Questions for the Head (Think)
- Do you desire to be with other believers? Does your desire match your action?
Reflection for the Heart (Worship)
- As you spend time with the Lord, ask Him whom you should reach out to spend time with to encourage in the Lord.
Action for the Hands (Do)
- We need the visitation (presence) of the Lord, and we need visitations from other believers. Call another believer and plan a lunch, coffee, or a visit to the home.
