(Read Philippians 4:6-7)
In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul gives the church another command. This isn’t like the first two in 4:4-5 (rejoice and be gentle). While they were a choice of something to do, this new command is a choice of something not to do. Paul says, “Do not be anxious about anything.” Stop for a moment and think about what worries you the most. Is it finances, children, sickness, or death? Jesus addressed worry and anxiety over simple things such as clothing, food, and the future (Matthew 6:27-34). These things still cause people to worry. With so much in life to be stressed out about, what is Paul’s solution?
Prayer is the antidote to anxiousness. Not only that but prayer also reminds us to rejoice and be gentle. Prayer refocuses our attention on God and reminds us to be thankful for how He provides, strengthens, and sustains us. Prayer reconnects us to God’s promises and relieves our utmost worries. It reminds us that God is sovereign, all-powerful, ever-present, and all-knowing. Prayer works because it unites us with a God always at work! If we lack joy – we should pray! If we find ourselves being harsh – we should pray! If we are worried – we should pray! To obey the commands of the Lord, we must be connected to the Lord in prayer.
Rejoice, be gentle, and don’t worry are the commands. Prayer is how we grow in them. So what is the reward for those who obey and pray? Paul says we get God’s peace. Did you catch that? Joyfulness in Christ brings peace. A gentle spirit brings peace. Praying lessens worry and increases peace. The peace of God isn’t like the fake peace the world peddles. The cheap imitation of peace this world offers doesn’t last or fulfill. It actually causes more anxiety. Worldly peace doesn’t produce peace – it steals it! When you have God’s peace, you can’t really explain why you aren’t anxious. You’re unsure why you don’t want to lash out and be rude. You can’t explain why you have joy in the middle of problems. All of that is explainable – it’s the presence of the Lord!
There have been times I should have been upset, in the flesh, and restless, but God settled me with His joy, gentleness, and peace. Through prayer and trust in the Lord, He supernaturally guards your heart and mind. You take on the mind of Christ, and He replaces worldly desires with trusting Him and doing His will. Oh, how we are rewarded by God when we trust and obey Him!
Questions for the Head (Think)
- Where do you lack God’s peace? How’s your prayer life? How’s your attitude of gratitude?
Reflection for the Heart (Worship)
- As you pray, thank God for who He is and all He has done for you. Allow His peace to wash over your thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
Action for the Hands (Do)
- What should you pray about that you continually worry about? Write a list of your concerns and then write a prayer with Scriptures for each item.
