(Read Philippians 4:21-23)
Paul ended his letter to the Philippians similarly to how he started it. He loved the Philippian believers, and it seems he wanted to bookend his letter of encouragement and instruction with genuine greetings of love. While he couldn’t be with them because of his imprisonment, hopefully, his love would be evident when the letter was read to them. Paul’s introduction and ending were not simply formalities to be overlooked. His final greeting once again displayed his view toward “God’s people” and “brothers and sisters” (v. 21). He wanted the Philippians to know they were just as much saints as those who were with Paul in Rome (Romans 16:1-15). How wonderful to know we have brothers and sisters in the faith worldwide!
Through sharing the gospel message, several who belonged to Caesar’s household had come to faith (4:22). God uses even our bad situations for opportunities to share the good news of His salvation. Paul’s imprisonment wasn’t in vain – people had come to Christ! He could confidently say, “What has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel” (1:12). For there to be saints worldwide, someone had to go and share the gospel outside their neighborhood and nation. In his closing words, Paul reminded the local church about the Universal church! Paul is reminding the local church to send people into the world and preach the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15). We must not isolate ourselves in our local church bubbles but be globally minded for gospel advancement!
As was his practice, Paul ended his letter by mentioning the great grace of the Lord Jesus Christ (v. 22). I pray that as you have studied Philippians over the last 70 or so days, you have grown in your understanding of God’s amazing grace. I hope you’ve seen God’s heart for the church through this beautiful letter the Spirit wrote through Paul. I pray you have increased in joy and have learned to rejoice in every circumstance. May the Lord’s grace abound as you honor God by walking in His Word, obeying His Spirit, and growing with other brothers and sisters as Jesus’ wonderful church.
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.” – Philippians 4:23
